Museum Vision: To be the foremost in knowledge about the Great Battle of Cane Brake.
Three years ago Tom Weidner, our museum director and founder, fulfilled his dream of opening a museum that talks about Greenville County’s only Revolutionary War battle, the Great Battle of Cane Brake. The museum started out in a classroom of the old Simpsonville Elementary School and now has expanded into three rooms. Tom created exhibits that touch on all aspects of the Revolution by not only covering Cane Brake but also showing how women, African Americans, and Native Americans played key roles in the cause for freedom. The museum has become a great place for people to come and learn about how their past is close to home.
Tom did not just create exhibits he also started local events such as our Colonial Faire that reach's out to the community. Two and half weeks ago the museum held its first annual George Washington Birthday Ball! We had a great turn out and raised enough money to start planning museum improvements such as, updating displays, children’s programs, and a creating a museum gift shop. We are a small museum in need of some big changes!
This blog will cover the museum’s journey and transformation over the next year. We hope to make significant changes that will attract more people to visit on a day to day basis rather than just coming to our events. Follow along with us as we embark on this new adventure. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas please share!
