Field trips are a great way for people of all ages to learn. They allow you to see what happens behind the scenes and to have new experiences. The museum board will be taking our first ever field trip to three local museums to see how they tell their story. We will evaluate what we like and do not like about each place while trying to get some ideas for our own exhibits.
Our first stop will be at the Travelers Rest Historical Society. This is a very small museum that covers a variety of topics. We want to see how they operate, how do they receive funding, and how they chose what to put on display. Next stop will be at the Museum and Library of Confederate History. This museum talks about life during a war. We want to see how they present their material and how exhibits with weaponry are displayed. Last, We will visit the American Legion Post 3 Cecil B. Buchanan War Museum. This museum covers major wars that America has fought in and has a lot of great exhibits for us to learn from.
Redesigning a museum is not easy! We want to create a space that tells a story our visitors can learn from.We must ask ourselves, "Are we presenting accurate information in the best way possible?" In reply: in some ways we are and in others we need a lot of help. We hope that this trip will be a good first step for our journey.
The board will be taking this trip on April, 2! We are all very excited to see what we can learn from other museums like us. I will blog about the whole experience the following week after our trip. So stay tuned!
