When I graduated from college in 2013 my grandmother gave me an address book with all the family addresses written in it. Though it was not the most exciting gift at the time, it is the only gift I use regularly today. Whenever a major holiday of life event happens I go to my desk and pull out the address book to write my family cards. Without this book I would be completely lost and an even worse procrastinator than I already am.
By keeping in contact with my family I am able to have better relationships with them. No one becomes upset because of not getting a thank you note for their Christmas present. The same is true at the museum. We must keep in constant contact with the community around us so that we have a better relationship with them!
Ever since the museum opened Tom has kept a record of who has come in or worked for the museum. If you were to look on top of the filing cabinet in the Board Room you would see a plastic card box filled with 3x5 cards. Each card has the name and address of important people to stay in contact with. It is a very handy thing to have! Originally our mailing list for the newsletters was kept in a red notebook that Tom would go through each quarter. The notebook has the addresses of all the local businesses in the Simpsonville Chamber of Commerce. Now our newsletter list and contacts are kept online through our website. Anytime someone requests to put their email on our list or has a question of interest I receive a notification in the museum’s email.
Now that the Colonial Faire is over we will be breaking out our contact lists and sending out thank you cards to everyone who came to help out. We want to show our appreciation to them and know that they are a vital part to what we do. Keeping in contact is the second key to success in my mind. The first key is obviously communication but one has to maintain that communication to build up a relationship. So send us your email or write us a message! We want to hear from you and you will hear from us.
